Sermón 3503 | Gozo en la Salvación

Deseo continuar con el tema de la mañana, solo que miraremos otro lado del mismo asunto importante.

Hablamos esta mañana, como no han olvidado, sobre estas palabras, "Tu propia salvación." Confío en que la mayoría de nosotros—ojalá pudiera esperar que todos nosotros—estuviera serio con respecto a nuestra propia salvación personal. Para aquellos que son serios, este segundo texto será el complemento del primero. Ellos desean que su propia salvación esté asegurada; es su propia salvación cuando la obtienen; pero aquí está la guía sobre cuál es la salvación correcta—en qué debería consistir nuestra propia salvación. No es nuestra propia salvación en otro sentido; es de Dios. "Me regocijaré en tu salvación." The salvation we have already spoken of is God's, and it is God's salvation in many ways. It was his in the planning. None but himself could have planned it. In his infinite wisdom he devised it. The salvation which is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, in the gospel is every part of it in all its architecture the fruit of divine skill. We may say, "Or with whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and who taught him knowledge?" In every part the divine hand may be seen; it is of God's planning and ordaining, or ever the earth was. So is it of God's providing. You have salvation wrapped up in the gift of the person of Jesus Christ. All of it lies in Christ. Because he died, our sin is put away. Because he lives, we shall live also. And Christ is the pure gift of God. All salvation is in him, and, therefore, all salvation is thus procured by God. It is God's salvation. And what is more, God not only plans and procures, but he also applies salvation. I believe in free agency, but I never yet met with a Christian man who was able to say that he came to Christ of his own free will without being drawn by the Spirit of God. Whatever our doctrinal view may be, the experimental fact is the same in every case. All believers will confess that they are God's workmanship, created anew in Christ Jesus. "No man can come unto me except the Father which hath sent me draw him." There is a want of power. "Ye will not come unto me that ye might have life." There is a want of will, and the Spirit of God, therefore, applies the salvation which God has planned, and which God has provided. And as the first application of this salvation is of God, so is it all the way through. I do not believe, dear brethren, that our religion is like the action of a clock wound up at first by a superior hand, and then left to go alone. No! every day the Holy Ghost must continue to work upon us, and in us, to will and to do according to God's good pleasure. And if you and I should ever get right up to the gate of pearl, and should hear the songs of the blessed within that gate, we should not be able to take the last step, but should turn back to our sin and folly even, if he that began a good work in us should cease to carry it on. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending. "Salvation is of the Lord," from first to last. He makes the rough draft of it, in conviction, upon our conscience; he goes on to complete the picture; and if there be one touch in the picture that is not of God, it is a blot upon it. If there be anything of the flesh, it will have to be wiped out; it is not consistent with the work of God. Of God is it in all respects. Now we know that this salvation is of God, not only because we are told that he planned it, and provided it, and applies it, but because it has the marks of God upon it. There is a certain line of poetry; I know it is Shakespeare's. Well, you know, I cannot quite tell you why, but yet I am sure no one ever wrote exactly in that way. I am reading the Psalms through, and I read and I say, "That is David's." I observe certain critics who say, "No, this belongs to the time of the captivity." I am certain it does not. And why? Because there is a Davidic ring about it, you know. The son, of Jesse, and he alone, could have said such things. Now in salvation there are the marks of divine authorship. I once saw a painting by Titan at Venice, and he had written, "Fecit, fecit Titian." He claimed it twice over, as if to make sure that someone else should not claim it. And God has put it three times over that there should be no doubt whatever that salvation is of God, and he must have the glory of it. Now observe the marks of God—what I may call the broad arrow of the King—set on salvation. It is full of mercy. Here is salvation for the blackest of sinners—salvation for all manner of sin—forgiveness for all manner of sin—salvation so full of grace that only God could have conceived it. "Who is a pardoning God like thee?" But this salvation is equally congenial with justice, for God never absolutely forgives a sin. There is always punishment for sin in every case. Jesus Christ, the Substitute, comes in and satisfies Justice before the word is spoken to the sinner, "Thy transgression is blotted out." In the salvation which God has provided on the cross by the death of his dear Son there is as much justice as there is mercy; and there is an infinity of both. Now this is God-like. Man, if he brings out one quality, usually clouds another with it; but God exhibits his character in harmonious completeness—as merciful as if he were not just, and as just as if he were not gracious. In the gospel, on this account, five see also divine wisdom. Whatever some may say about the doctrine of substitution, Christ is still the power of God and the wisdom of God. The way, so simple, yet so sublime, by which God is just, and yet the justifier of him that believeth, exhibits the infinite wisdom of the Most High.

Pero no te retendré mencionando todos los atributos divinos. Es cierto que todos brillan en el evangelio, ni nadie puede decir cuál de las letras está mejor escrita: el poder, la sabiduría o la gracia. Todos están allí, demostrando que la salvación es de Dios.

Para los hombres impíos sería como tocar las campanas de la alegría universal; se entregarían al desorden según su propia voluntad. ¿Y dónde estaría el creyente? Sería un huérfano. Su sol sería oscurecido; sus esperanzas estarían muertas y enterradas. Juzga por esto si estás salvo. Si estás salvo, eres atraído hacia Dios, buscas ser como Dios, deseas honrar a Dios. Si no hay ninguna de estas cosas en ti, entonces te insto a que lo consideres, porque estás en la hiel de la amargura y en las cadenas de la iniquidad. ¡Que Dios tenga misericordia de ti! No necesito decir más que la salvación es de Dios, y que Dios debe tener toda la gloria de ella. Todos en la tierra que están salvos, y todos en el cielo que están salvos, atribuirán su salvación enteramente al Dios siempre bendito, y se unirán a Jonás, quien en las profundidades del mar hizo esta confesión de fe: "La salvación es del Señor". Pero ahora, en segundo lugar, nuestro texto (habiendo notado la salvación divina en él) tiene: una declaración franca.

"Me regocijaré en tu salvación." Aquí hay alguien que se destaca de la multitud común y dice: "He oído hablar de la salvación de Dios; ¡me regocijaré en ella! ¡Me regocijaré en ella! Algunos la desprecian. La oyen y hacen oídos sordos. Cuanto más tiempo la escuchan, más cansados están de ella. ¡Pero yo me regocijaré en tu salvación!" Aquí hay un personaje distinguido, que seguramente es así gracias a la gracia que lo distingue. ¡Oh! Espero que muchos de nosotros aquí podamos levantarnos y decir, si este fuera el momento y el lugar: "Que otros digan lo que quieran, y consideren la cruz como objeto de burla, y a Jesucristo como olvidado, yo soy su siervo; me regocijaré en su salvación." Hay algunos que descansan en otra salvación. Todos lo hicimos alguna vez. Pero quien habla en el texto deja de lado la justicia propia como trapos inmundos. Todo lo deja a un lado y dice: "Me regocijaré en tu salvación." Si fuera justo, no lo diría. Si tuviera una santidad perfecta, no la mencionaría en comparación con la justicia de Cristo; pero siendo un pecador indigno, sin un solo mérito propio, no seré tan necio como para inventar una justicia ficticia, sino que me regocijaré en tu salvación. ¡Los ves allí!—aquellos adoradores de la mujer escarlata—ellos descansan en su sacerdote. Él se pone tocados, azules, rosas, escarlatas, blancos, y no sé qué más—todo tipo de pequeños juguetes para complacer a los necios. Y hay algunos que se regocijan en esa salvación que proviene de un pecador “infalible”—que viene de un falso sacerdote de Dios. Pero nosotros miramos a Cristo, que está delante del trono eterno y pide los méritos de su propia sangre. Decimos:

Que todas las formas que los hombres ideen
Asalten nuestra fe con arte traicionero,
Las enviaremos al vacío de la vanidad y las mentiras

“Me regocijaré en tu salvación.” Puede que haya algunos esta noche a quienes les hable que se regocijan en la salvación de Dios mediante su abundante gracia y que tienen muy poco más de qué alegrarse. Eres muy pobre. ¡Ah! ¡qué bienvenido eres a esta casa! ¡Qué contento estoy de que hayas venido! Siempre siento alegría de que a la gente se le predique el evangelio. Bueno, no tienes grandes tierras, no llevas anillos de oro en los dedos; vienes con el atuendo del trabajo. No importa, hermano mío, aférrate a la vida eterna y di: “Me regocijaré en tu salvación.” Quizás estés enfermo esta noche—tu pobre y débil cuerpo apenas podría arrastrarse hasta la asamblea del pueblo de Dios. Bueno, bueno, es algo duro tener que sufrir así, pero si no puedes regocijarte en un cuerpo sano, al menos regocíjate en su salvación. Mira esta noche a Jesús; pon tu confianza solo en él, y tendrás un manantial suficiente de alegría, aunque no tengas nada más. Posiblemente algunos de ustedes que se aferren a Cristo y se regocijen en él pasarán momentos difíciles en casa: su padre se burlará de ustedes, su madre no simpatizará; sus compañeros de trabajo mañana, si oyen que se han convertido, se reirán, harán bromas y se burlarás de ustedes. ¿Qué dices? ¿Eres un cobarde? ¿Retrocederás porque exige un sacrificio? ¡Oh! si es así, entonces en verdad no eres digno del nombre, y te consideras tal; pero si eres lo que deberías ser, dirás: “Que se rían de mí como quieran, y me escupan como les plazca, me regocijaré en tu salvación.”

Si en mi rostro por tu querido nombre,
Pudiere haber vergüenza y reproche;
Saludaré el reproche y daré la bienvenida a la vergüenza,
Porque tú me recordarás.

Se necesita algo de valor, pero debemos tenerlo en la causa de Cristo. Vosotros, miserables despreciables que solo vais a seguir a Cristo en tiempo soleado, y os vais de nuevo cuando una nube oscurece el cielo, merecéis bien la ira que cae sobre vosotros. Son como el Nautilus, muy bien en el mar tranquilo, pero la primera ola que se levanta recogen sus velas y se hunden en lo profundo, y ya no se les ve más. ¡Oh! cuidad, cuidad, cuidad de una religión de buen tiempo; cuidad de una religión que no resistirá el fuego; pero sed de tal manera que, si todo el mundo abandonara a Cristo, digáis: "Me regocijaré en su salvación"; y si fuerais expulsados, si fuerais echados del mundo mismo, y no se considerara que debáis vivir, aún así estaríais contentos de que así fuera, si pudierais ser contados entre el pueblo de Dios, y se os permitiera regocijaros en su salvación. ¿Esto, mientras intento expresarlo, despierta una emoción santa en algún alma aquí? ¿Hay alguien que ha sido un extraño para mi Señor que esta noche pueda decir: "Deseo regocijarme en su salvación"? No puedo olvidar, cuando me sentaba de joven bajo la galería de un pequeño lugar de culto, escuchando el evangelio predicado simplemente—el bendito momento en que me llevó a decidir seguir a Cristo. Nunca me he avergonzado de haberlo hecho. Nunca lo he lamentado. Él es un Maestro bendito. Últimamente me ha tratado duramente, pero es un Maestro bendito. Seguiría a sus talones aunque solo como un perro, porque es mejor ser su perro que ser el favorito del diablo. Él es un Maestro bendito. Que diga lo que quiera y haga lo que quiera. ¡Oh! ¿no hay aquí ningún joven, ningún muchacho, ningún niño, ninguna niña; no hay ningún anciano que diga: "Me regocijaré en tu salvación"? Oh Espíritu eterno, ven y toca algún corazón, y haz de esto, su derecho de nacimiento espiritual, que puedan decir: "Yo—yo—yo me regocijaré en tu salvación."

Pero debemos continuar, porque el tiempo aprieta. Tenemos, en tercer lugar, que considerar en el texto:—una emoción encantadora.

We have noticed the divine salvation, and the outspoken avowal; now we will notice the delightful emotion. "I will rejoice in thy salvation." It is an unfortunate thing that Christianity gets associated with melancholy. I will not forbid the banns, for they are not very near of kin, but I wish they were further apart every day. It is a good thing for the melancholy to become a Christian; it is an unfortunate thing for the Christian to become melancholy. If there is any man in the world that has a right to have a bright, clear face and a flashing eye, it is the man whose sins are forgiven him, and who is saved with God's salvation. In order for any man, however, to rejoice in God's salvation, he must, first of all, know it. There must be an intelligent apprehension of what it is. Next, he must grasp it by an act of faith as his own. Then, having grasped it, he must study it to know the price at which it was bought, and all the qualities—the divine qualities that follow from it. Then he must hold it fast, and seek to get out the sweetness from it. What is there in God's salvation that should make us rejoice? I do not know what to select, for it is all joy and all rejoicing. It is enough to make our heart to ring with joy to think that there should be a salvation at all for such poor souls as we are. We may well hang out all the streamers of our spirits, and strew the streets of our soul with flowers, for King Jesus has come to dwell there. Ring every bell; give him a glorious welcome. Let all the soul be glad when Jesus enters and brings salvation with him, for the salvation of Christ is so suitable that we may well rejoice in it. Dear brother, if you are saved, I know the salvation of Christ suited you. It did me—exactly—it was made on purpose for me. I am as sure of it as if there were no other sinner to be saved. It was the gospel that brought power to the weak, nay, it brought life to the dead; it brought everything to those that had nothing; it is just the sort of gospel for a penniless, bankrupt sinner like myself. We rejoice in the suitability of the gospel; we rejoice in the freeness of it. We have nothing to pay; we have no price to pay, neither of promise, nor of anything that was our own. Salvation was freely given to us in Christ Jesus. Let us rejoice in it, then. Oh! rejoice in the richness of that salvation. When the Lord pardoned our sins, he did not pardon half of them, and leave some of them on the book, but with one stroke of the pen he gave a full receipt for all our debts. When we went down into the fountain filled with blood, and washed, we did not come up half-clean, but there was no spot nor wrinkle upon us—we were white as driven snow. Glory be to God for such a rich salvation as this. And he did not in that day save us with a perhaps and a chance salvation that set us on a rock, and say, "Keep yourself there—you must depend upon yourselves", but this was the covenant he made with us, "A new heart also will I give thee, and a right spirit will I put within thee." It was a complete salvation, which would not permit a failure. The salvation, which is given to the soul that believes is on this wise, "I give unto my sheep eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand." "The water that I shall give him shall be a well of water springing up unto everlasting life." I believe the perseverance of the saints to be the very gem of the gospel. I could not hold the truth of Scripture if this could be disproved to me, for every page seems to have this upon it, if nothing else, that "the righteous shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger." In this my soul rejoices, that I have a salvation to preach to you which, if you receive it, will effectually save you if your hearts are given to Christ, and will keep you, and preserve you, and bring you into the eternal kingdom of his glory. I will rejoice in the certain and abiding character of that salvation. Oh! there is enough in the salvation of Christ to make heaven full of bliss; there is enough to make us full of praise. Let us take up the theme; let us talk by the way to one another about it; let us talk to sinners about it; let us recommend religion by our cheerfulness. Levity be far from us, but happiness let it be the happiest sphere in which we live if we have little else to rejoice in, we have enough here. Whatever may be our condition or prospects, we may still rejoice in God's salvation, and let us not fail to be filled with this most blissful emotion.

Pues la visión de Cristo, que es nuestra salvación, y en quien nos regocijamos, será entonces más gloriosamente clara y radiantemente hermosa, porque las vistas y sonidos de la tierra se habrán desvanecido de nosotros.

Ahora, en lugar de mirar estas partes externas de la muerte, piensa en esto: "Me regocijaré en tu salvación". Cuando me despedí de nuestro querido hermano Cook hace unos días, él no podía decir mucho. Estaba muy, muy débil, pero lo que dijo fue simplemente esto: "Jesús, Jesús, Jesús es todo". Bueno, yo hablé, leí y oré, y cuando terminamos, él simplemente dijo: "La sangre—la sangre, la sangre—esa es toda mi esperanza". Vaya, se veía tan tranquilo ante la perspectiva de morir como cualquiera de ustedes sentados aquí, y estaba tan encantado con la esperanza de estar donde Jesús está como cualquier novia en el día de su boda. Fue un deleite ver la bendita calma y paz que tenía ese hombre de Dios. Y cuando llegue mi momento de morir, sea quien sea, sin importar cuán pequeño sea mi lugar en la Iglesia de Dios, si estoy en Cristo, me regocijaré en su salvación; haré que el valle oscuro resuene con sus alabanzas; haré que el río de la muerte mismo retroceda como lo hizo el Mar Rojo en otros tiempos, con mis canciones triunfantes; entraré al cielo con esto en mi corazón y en mis labios: '¡Me regocijaré en tu salvación! ¡Digno es el Cordero que fue inmolado para recibir honra, poder, dominio y gloria por los siglos de los siglos!' Y, hermanos, si esto es lo que podemos hacer al morir, esto es lo que haremos por los siglos de los siglos: "Me regocijaré en tu salvación". Quizás algunos de ustedes hayan venido desde muy lejos, cruzando el mar. Puede que pronto estén nuevamente a bordo de un barco. Puede ser que estén en peligro, o que después estén enfermos. Bien, que la congregación de esta noche en este día de julio se levante en sus mentes, y si olvidan al predicador (y eso no importará), aún si escuchan una voz que dice: "¿Puedes regocijarte en la salvación de Dios?" Espero que, aun si faltan veinte años, entonces pueda ser como la voz de Dios para su alma y llevarlos al Salvador. Pero sería mucho mejor si vinieran a él esta noche y pueden hacerlo. ¡Que el Espíritu de Dios los traiga! Todo aquel que cree en el Señor Jesucristo tiene vida eterna. Todo el evangelio está envuelto en el mensaje de Cristo, que él ha enviado por sus apóstoles: "El que cree y es bautizado será salvo." Para cada uno de ustedes esto—esto—es la palabra: "Cree en el Señor Jesucristo, y serás salvo, y tu casa." Que Dios añada su propia bendición, por amor de Cristo. Amén.
